HnM
Hello Beyonce our rescue girl had an encounter with a stray cat yesterday and her eye is bloodshot. She seems a bit under the weather although eating okay now; she's a bit disoriented. Any ideas / suggestions about chickens' eyes? Do they weep like ours? Do I need antibiotic eye ointment or should I leave it a bit? Thanks, all!
Christian
You could try bathing it with cold tea. It has antiseptic properties. Just watch her and make sure she is eating and drinking. It is probably the shock that has affected her. Try a couple of drops of rescue remedy in her water to calm her.
Old Speckled Hen
If it's scratched I'd definitely bung some antibiotic in. You can gat "Infected Eyes" from a pharmacist. It does contain chloramphenicol and will not have a veterinary licence for chickens. Some of the antibiotic will be absorbed through the conjunctiva and appear at infinitesimaly low levels in the blood but I doubt you would have to worry about it contaminating her eggs. jools+6
if you have an independant chemist near you they are brill . especially if they deal in homeopathic medicine . most will recomend you a remedy or something else . our old chemist , douglas , was brill . he used his skills to treat his retrievers and was happy to help .. salt water is great for eyes ... Egluntyne
Christian's tip re the cold tea (no milk, no sugar!) works very well. I've used it a couple of times on my girls. I've even used it on myself when my contact lenses have got on my nerves a bit. Slightly antiseptic and very soothing.
HnM
Thanks, everyone! I took Beyonce to our vet who examined her eye very thoroughly in case the claw had penetrated the eye. He gave us some antibiotic eye ointment and she's already doing better. Better safe (and poorer ) than sorry, eh!
