Broody for 6 weeks - and counting...

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Our Skyline, Cinderella, has been broody since we returned from holiday on 2 September. We've tried almost everything, and the thing is she happily 'snaps out of it' each day to spend the day roaming in the garden but then is broody again by morning.

She has no access to the nest at all (Eglu shut during the day, flowerpot in nest as they settle to sleep), and has been dunked in cold water 3-4 times daily. One of the weeks we combined the dunking with a blast from the hose.

Anyone got a similar chicken??

Actually yes :( One of my Miss Pepperpots used to go broody at the drop of a hat, once it lasted for 10 weeks. The next time it happened I made a broody cage out of a hamster cage and put her in it for 3 days, she snapped out of it and, fingers crossed, has never gone broody again. There is a sticky somewhere which explains how to make a broody cage.

One of mine would seem like she snapped out of it then by morning she was back at it. I think it is because at night she got a chance to warm up again in the eglu. In the end the only thing that snapped her out of it was keeping her confined in a safe place in the run, removing all auboise from the floor so she couldn't snuggle in that and leaving her there with food and water for about 2 full days and nights and I think it is the keeping her there over night which really does the trick as it cooled her right down. The broody pen in my run is a metre square. I would let her free range for an hour with the girls but if i saw her snuggling down anywhere it was time for her to go back.
