20th egg this morning!

So far the girls are doing quite well, Apache has laid 9 whole ones (not counting a rubbery thing or a smashed yukky thing). Sioux has laid a grand total of 11 (and one softie which popped out and she totally ignored it and continued pecking the ground). Sioux's are slightly bigger than Apaches, and weighing more - nearly 1.75 ounces. So now with all the cost performance that OH has worked on, we are now down to £20.07 per egg! I gather we will need 800 to break even and not get any more supplies for them!

At one time they were both laying one egg per day, then we had a hiccup and then every other day, and now they are both laying daily again. I didn't think that the breeds laid as many. Perhaps it will settle down to fewer once they are in the swing of things.

Apache's eggs have such a strong inner membrane that I cracked one open, the shell came off and the membrane still maintained the egg shape! I had to cut it open! Luckily a broken one still had the membrane intact, so we cooked it before it could be contaminated. Fortunately she now has the hang of laying in the nesting box - sometimes Sioux can be a pain and nip in and sit in there for ages, lays nothing (even when she has only laid an egg shortly beforehand) while Apache is getting more frustrated.
