Buried Eggs

Recommended Posts

Only one of my girls is laying at the moment (I think!) in the last week I have had four eggs. My husband is at home for a few days and said yesterday that he heard one of the hens making a lot of noise but that there was no egg...

Upon cleaning out the aubiose in the nest box today I found two buried eggs right at the very bottom of the nest box. I guess one was new and the other I didn't realise had been laid previously.

Has anyone heard of hens burying eggs before and is it normal?

Mine do, but i dont think they are burying them really, they just like to go in the nest box every so often and chuck the straw around and kick the hemcore around to  and the eggs end up buried under mounds of hemcore or sitting in the drainage channel as all the beddings fallen out through it.

The trail of straw through the cube and down the ladder usually gives the game away, but hey as long as they're happy :D

I think the wriggle around a bit to get nice any comfy so the egg that was there previously just moved down maybe.

When my girls just started to lay I had put a pretend egg into the nest box to show them where to go and I found it outside in the run  . I was amazed, as my (green eglu) is on a platform. Must have wriggled so much it flew out of the nest box and rolled down into the run - lucky it wasn't a real egg. Never happened since though.
