Light Sussex in eglu?

Recommended Posts

We have just had our eglu delivered and are hoping to get some chickens in a few weeks (we live too far away to have had omlet ones).

We were planning on getting 2 light sussex but have just read some omlet advice that says NO to heavy breeds in eglus. I assume the reason for this is obvious - lack of space etc? Even though I read that they didn't mind being confined. Am thinking that we might now have to change our minds. Does anyone else have light sussex in their eglu?

Not sure what else to get otherwise... we want something that's quite tame. The farm also has breeds such as legbar, leghorn, dorking, welsummer and others. Anyone got any suggestions? We'd just like quite a few eggs and for them to be tame and also not get frustrated about being stuck in the eglu most weekdays...... want them to be happy :o)

Thanks in advance.

Hi Bridgy Chooks and welcome!

I'm no eggspert (despite my current posting status), having had mine for less than a week - but after reading about "too posh to push" pure breeds, I decided that hybrid layers were a better bet. Mine are too young to lay yet, but I take comfort in the thought that they'll lay more to start with and be less broody (on average). There'll be time to try pure breed bantams, etc, when I've clocked up some hands-on eggsperience :)

I had a light sussex in the eglu with a pepperpot and a gingernut ranger and they were more than happy to cuddle up together. Mine were more or less free range so they were not confined to the eglu run however I would imagine that a couple of light sussex or one light sussex and one other would be fine!

Daphne, my light sussex was lovely - a good layer with a lovely character and very pretty to look at. Unfortnately Mr Fox thought so too, hence my other girls are now only allowed out in the garden when we are out there too.

THank you for all of your replies. I take your point about hybrids being more productive but the light sussex are apparently one of the best pure breed layers and I've wanted one for ages. So that we have a bit of variety, we have asked for one light sussex and one speckled sussex... will post pics when we pick them up in a few weeks time if anyone is interested.

Thanks again for your advice.
