Hi - just been doing a search but couldn't find it as I am sure someone has asked this before....

When my eglu and 3 chickens were delivered yesterday the man filled up the grub with layers pellets and I think he said it would last a couple of days. Well today is end of day 2 and there still seems loads left so should I throw it away and replace it tomorrow or will it last til it is all eaten?

Thanks!

Gemma

To be honest as my girls are so tiny the food goes down incredibly slowly, though it is satisfiing to see the little peck marks throught the grug at the end of the day

I would just leave the food, if it goes down so they can't reach it then I 'd fill it up and really I'd only change the food over completly, once every couple of months, we got our girls in August and we've only emptied out their grug, cleaned it and filled it with new food once.

Good Luck with it, and Congrats on the new girls! :D

I just leave the food out all the time. I then fill up the feeders as the greedy piglets empty them. I don't throw away any that is left at the end of the day.

I know some people have had problems doing this as it can attract vermin but I have never had a problem with rats ( I do own two killer cats though ).

mine didn't eat much at all at first but once they recovered from the move and settled in they ate more. I find that the grub holders generally keep it all clean and dry. I keep my layers pellets in a shed so I put them into a big plastic bin with a lid so that they don't attract mice or get damp and they are easier to get out without spilling any and wasting any/attracting vermin.

Thanks for asking this, because I was wondering too. Mine seem to be eating hardly anything, and I chucked a load of dampish pellets away at the weekend as I was worried about them being stale or mouldy - wondered if that was why they weren't being eaten to be honest. But they don't seem to have eaten much from the new supply either, so I guess they aren't very hungry. They love their mixed corn treats though, and go mad for a few grapes, so I suppose they must be OK. None of mine have started laying or even crouching yet, so I'm not expecting any eggies til spring.
