AnnieP
Poor Hazel! Actually, when the wind takes their feathers in a certain way, chooks HAVE got quite bare bums... I was horrified when I noticed once with mine, until I examined all the others. If you get to have a closer look, and see that it is problematic, then I guess purple spray would be a good deterrant to the others to prevent them from pecking her, but if it doesn't look pecked, I'd be tempted to leave it be. Steve.
I've not had her knickers, honest. If her feathers aren't anywhere to be found it sounds like my problem
quickcluck
there are feathers about, but the wrong colour for her!!!! maybe I should knit her a new pair!
Egluntyne
If her feathers aren't anywhere to be found it sounds like my problem Eh? Shock: My pepperpot girls are all moulting, and, not very sensibly in view of the weather, seem to be going commando. Their nether regions all look alarmingly red, but there is no sign of pecking etc, so I'm leaving them to it.

Maybe "Ooops, word censored!"ody told quickcluck's chickens this. Or maybe I am misinformed.
quickcluck
I didn't think they were old enough as they 'hatched' in spring this year... Have had a closer inspection Not pretty, under her vent is bald, she looks plucked but never having seen a bald chick I don't know what being pecked at looks like! There are no 'bite' marks her vent looks red, and there is one solitary feather left there If I think it's been bleeding should I use something then???? I've never seen any pecking going on....... quickcluck
OK, Have had a GOOD look not pretty. Her vent has been pecked and is bleeding, and she is balder than I thought. Have brought her in, given her a wash and dry and covered her vent in purple spray. She is now in a box in the bathroom!!! Should I leave her there overnight or pop her back into the cube later.... Can't rule out if it's self inflicted as wasn't sure if she was preening after a wash or just blatantly pulling them out!!! HELP
Egluntyne
I'd keep her in overnight or you will have to get up extra early tomorrow to hoik her out again, just in case she is being pecked by the others. The purple Spray will sooth and will also taste vile so hopefully the others will leave her alone.
Steve.
Oh no ... I am no expert (as you know) maybe get some Ukadex. It does work ... my chooks are peck free since application ... but I think we did use half a can ... I don't know what to do if they go back to their old ways as it is expensive to purchase. Maybe it's the time of year and they just eat feathers ... or something. Eating mash does keep them busy ... it's a pain to prepare etc given that I am bone idle. quickcluck
Hmmmmmmmm I've got some stuff that I use for the dog to stop him chewing himself, I wonder if that will do until I can get some ukadex? She is in a box at the mo, will put her back in the morning. Everytime i check on her she's not asleep!

That's called 'Fridge Light' syndrome and my chooks did it when they slept in the garage
quickcluck
Well she survived her night in the box! This morning we got her out, her bum looked much better or what we could see under the purple spray!! Soooooooo have re purpled with tea tree this time and sprayed her feathers with nasty tasting stuff and put her back in... Will observe her today and see how she is... Anything else I should be doing?
Steve.
How are they getting on?
quickcluck
They seem fine. Hazel is looking pretty battered and bald!! She looks even worse in the light of day with a purple bum and wet soggy feathers! I have noticed that a few of the others have a hint of purple too!!! Bought a cat carrier today just in case....... fingers crossed we wont need it. Am keeping my eyes peeled for any of the red stuff!
sandyhas3chucks
If it looks very sore but not open there is a yellow nappy rash cream theat works a treat at calming called"metanium". i need only put it on thinly every 5 days or so, & it keeps it calm for ages. Am guessing brand new feathers on a bad bum pecked for a year itch or something( Egluntine any answers?) I have my girl sleep in the bathroom(unheated & the 2 nasties are no worse in the morning when they are all out together than when thy were sleeping together & somone on this or forum has one that always sleeps in the house & goes in the run with the others in the morning & rekons the others don't realise. So my guess is a rest from pecking whilst iot heals is good. (but I am no expert, just my limitted experience & twists of fate)
quickcluck
Any advice is good advice sandy, so thanks!!!
Patricia7455
Metanium. I used that on my babies bums and it was the best thing for nappy rash (that and fresh air) never heard of putting it on hens bottoms though, sounds like it is worth a try. Gallina
This is what a thoroughly pecked bottom looks like (apologies to all those who have seen it before): I thought it was worth showing it to distinguish a plucked bottom from the naked bit that shows when the wind blows. mostin
Aaaaaawwww, the poor little thing, that looks very draughty.
jess
Hi, My chickens have had the same thing? Well one of my girls, what I did was gave her a really good wash that end. With some kind soap then a pat dry. She had some weird matted feathers (not lice) and I cut away those feathers carefully. Now her feathers have all grown back properly, hope this helps if you try it!
sandyhas3chucks
ah bless her. draughty
Gallina
My hen has a pretty feathery bottom again now. I just thought it was worth resurrecting that picture, because a plucked bottom is pretty obvious, and there was some debate above about whether a hen had been plucked or not. My hens don't mind being plucked in the slightest: but I mind, for aesthetic reasons.
jomaxsmith
This is what a thoroughly pecked bottom looks like That's a useful picture - I washed my Maran Cuivre's dirty knickers recently and was surprised that she had a bulge below her vent exactly like your girl. Now I can see it's normal in a hen of that shape and she's not malformed! Jo
quickcluck
Thanks Jess and Gallina....... Great picture, and hazel does look a bit like that, only now covered with purple spray so didn't want to post the pic... How long to the feathers take to grow back??? I gave them tuna today as that's supposed to help.......
