colintdixon
I have a 20 week old Brahma who is rapidly losing weight. She has been eating normally, her droppings also look normal, and visibly looks healthy apart from her weight. However she has been gradually getting weaker and weaker and now just sleeps most of the day. I can't see any evidence of mites or worms, and my other four hens are fine. I have now brought her inside and was advised to give her live yoghurt, ginger and garlic in her food, and a little vinegar in her water. But she really has no appetite at all. This happened to another hen earlier this year and she died, so I am extremely worried! Other than take her to the vet, is there anything else I can do? Egluntyne
I would keep her warm, try to get fluids into her and take her to the vet soonish as she sounds very ill.
colintdixon
How do I get fluids in her as she doesn't want to drink anything herself?
Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry to hear about your poorly hen . Would she eat "wet" foods like grapes, sweetcorn or cucumber? That might get a bit of water into her.
Egluntyne
How do I get fluids in her as she doesn't want to drink anything herself? Can you get hold of one of those syringes designed for getting medicines into toddlers? They cost about a quid....Sainsbury's have them as a rule. Or. another suggestion, some-one on the forum recently used an old sports bottle and found that it worked quite well. If you have one knocking about you could try that. Just dribble a bit of water sweetened with a couple of drops of honey into her beak...as often as you can. Good luck.
colintdixon
Sadly she's died. I really have no idea what was wrong with her. Some have said it might have been her liver, as there were no external symptoms other than the rapid weight and energy loss. I think the lesson to be learnt is keep picking up your birds and check their weight.
