Does anyone elses girls have a night time wander in their run? Or is it just mine?

 

Hubby went to put some rubbish in the bin about 11pm last night and two of my girls were in the run. He did say it was quite windy and their shower curtain was flapping a bit so it may have disturbed them. If you haven't guessed we leave the eglu door open all the time.

 

About a week after we got them we had an incident where the security light was on for a while and all three came pelting out into the run, we've since directed the light away from them as far as we can.

 

Are they really meant to wander around in the dark? Apparently one of them had a bit of a late night feed before going back into the eglu.

 

P.S I've posted a question about watery poo in the Chicken Clinic section, if anyone can give me some advice I would be very grateful

Mine do the same especially when the security light goes on and always when the back door opens, I love it because I get to see them after work - I am not sure if it's good for them or not though!

My chickens Eglu is near my back door and sometimes when I go out to shut inner door they all come running out to greet me again, sometimes this can happen 2-3 times before I manage to creep up and shut the inner night door

The only way I can now do this is to switch off the security light, go out the front door and sneak in the side gate with no torch and approach the Eglu from behind!

Glad it's not just mine, ours are close to the back door too. I know during the day they get very excited when I open the back door, so I don't know if last night they heard my hubby opening the door, and came out to investigate.

 

I'm presuming it doesn't do them any harm to get up and down during the night. For all I know they could always be having a party and a feast in the early hours while we're not watching.

I have mine by the back door in their winter quarters & have had the same thing, we pull doen the kitchen blids & stay in darkness till they have gone to bed! The bulb is now out of our security light

Smeegal (my daughters chuck and one and only layer) likes to pop out for a quick night time feast if i put the kitchen light on and their eglu door is open

That was why I stopped closing the Eglu doors at night. No matter how late I went out, walking on my eyelashes, two hens would rush out and greet me.

Daphne started getting up at night about 4mths ago, the first night she did it was really hot and we thought that was the reason, but now I think its the security light! Its only Daphne though, Phoebe stays tucked up!
