Can I hire a spare Eglu in the SE for introductions? updated

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately Nigella my lovely PP died yesterday after struggling to lay an egg. As I work Monday to Wednesday and the evenings are dark before I get home, I was not aware that she was even ill until I saw her struggling in the nestbox that morning but she was dead within minutes! I feel so negligent!

Anyway, Delia is now all on her own and seems so lost without her pal.

I’ve read the threads about introducing new chickens slowly and keeping them separate etc, so now I need to beg, borrow or more realistically hire a spare Eglu before I can rush out and get a couple of new POL chickens.

Can anyone help me out with a loan or a hire for the few weeks it will take, or suggest something else that will be sufficiently fox proof and comfortable?

Many thanks

Lynne

So sorry to hear about Nigella - don't feel bad, because she may not even have shown any signs of illness beforehand, chickens are very good at concealing this. At the moment I only see my chickens for 5 minutes in the morning before I go to work, Monday to Friday, and that's the case for lots of us when the days get shorter.

I know Penguinmad has an Eglu for hire, I thought there was a sticky somewhere about Eglus for rent but I can't find it. Try sending her a pm, she's in Essex so not too far away from you.

You may find that as Delia's on her own, introducing one other chicken might not be so bad, the worst problems seem to be introducing one or more when there's an established flock. Best of luck.

I'm very happy.

Thank you so much for the help and advice Cinnamon. I'm home, the Eglu's assembled (in heavy rain :boohoo: ) and the new girls PP black rock and (white chicken) amber star are happily installed and awaiting names.

The photos are downloading onto the computer so I should be able to link to them soon.

Very happy Lynne

I think I've decided on names - this time I'm going for a flower theme. The Black Rock will be Rosie and the very white Amber Star will be Lily. Husband and daughter wanted Gladys and Ethel but they're my chickens! :D

We had a terrible job getting them into the eglu this evening :wall: . The torch trick didn't work, so my daughter's PA crawled into the run and lifted them in and I closed the door. I hope that tomorrow they wil get the idea.

Well after one day, it seems that Rosie PP is bossing Lily (white chicken) around so that Lily has to grab food when Rosie isn't looking.

I shall set up separate feeding stations on opposite sides of the run tomorrow and see if that helps. The problem only started this afternoon and doesn't seem really nasty (yet). I thought that Lily was bigger than Rosie too!
