BeckyBoo
Just clicked on one of her tracks and realised that I'd heard it before just didn't know who sang it (it's a sign of getting old - "Ooooh, I like that song, you know, the one by whatsername?) - Brilliant! Begin to Hope! Mrs B

BeckyBoo
i think it was called Fidelity - it's very good! Mrs B
kitbag
yeah I love 'Fidelity'! Try 'Sampson' as well - its absolutely beautiful! Others like 'Hotel song' are just really really random and talk about 'Orca whales and owls'! She is so original and she writes all her own songs as well! A chickychickychick-ENN!!
It's so odd hearing Fidelity played in shops sometimes. She's so underground it always throws me, but that's a biggish hit. Mary Anne Meets the Gravediggers is a great album. I love the way she plays around with the musicality of language and pronounces words the way you wouldn't expect from a singer. She really makes you sit up and listen. And she has some wonderful imagery - if a little dark in places! I have that album and Begin to Hope. Begin to Hope is a lot more commercial but there's a fair amount of depth to it nonetheless. If you like Regina, you might like Get Away From Me by Nellie McKay. She's got that same sassy, New York, syncopated jazzy precociousness. But she's a bit more 'show tunes'. Joan as Policewoman is also another really original poetical singer songwriter. You might enjoy her album Real Life. This is possibly the most pretentious response I've ever posted, but hey! Regina does sing in Russian and quote Louis XV on Apres Moi on the Begin to Hope album! Anna x
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
You might also like Joanna Newsom. She's a bit like Kate Bush, but plays virtuoso harp and has a very odd voice indeed - very high and childlike. It's an acquired taste, and quite screechy on her album The Milk-Eyed Mender. My favourite album by her is Ys which has these lush very orchestral sort of storytelling songs on it. Ys was a mythical buried town which ended up drowned. It's sort of poetical fairystories with a lot of harp and orchestra. Really beautiful. Takes about three listens to get into it but it's a very rewarding album. Have you discovered lastfm.com? If you go to 'radio' on it and type in your favourite artist, they'll play songs by them and similar artists. It's really good.
