Hi

 

I let my hens out to free range when I am home but recently it seems to be raining all the time when I am in.

 

Do I let my hens out in the garden or do I keep them under shelter in their extended eglu run.

 

I know that they have water proof feathers but I would like to know that it will be ok for them to be out in the rain. will they catch a cold being in the rain for too long?

Mine often free range in the rain. They look like drowned rats but it seems to do them no harm.

 

They shelter when they have had enough.

I agree with Egluntine, they'll take cover if they need to ... but a word of warning, they do much more damage to the garden when it's wet. If your garden is small, you might want to consider keeping them in a bit more when it's raining, as they can trash it in no time!

Mine always yell to be let out no matter how hard it's raining, then after a few minutes they'll run back into the yard to shelter. I think it's the principle of the thing with them

The first time mine were out in the rain they just stood there and ended up like drowned rats. I tried to towel them down, but they weren't keen. Now they do tend to stand under a bush.

My garden did end up like the Somme though.
