to use or not to use -wood chipping from tree surgeon - help

Recommended Posts

Hi

Last week I was quite pleased with myself when I was given a truck load of wood chipping from the tree surgeon who was chopping my neighbour's tree down.

to cut along story short, today I went to use it and I noticed that there is a dusting of grey/blue powder on some of the the wood when I used my spade to lift some. The top layer appears to be fine it is only approx 2cm down that the dust covering is.

Is this mould? is it dangerous for the hens?

any advice welcomed

many thanks

Kit

Probably honeyfungus, I was worried cos I had some in the garden but on another poultry forum I was told not to worry. I searched the internet and couldnt find anything detremental.

Actually thats white mould not blue grey. I know aspergillus is a problem if inhaled but not found anything on any other moulds.

Thanks

but i have done some more searching on this site and I am very confused. I have seen posting which advise against bark chippings as this harbours mould. I have also seen postings where there are recommendations to contact local tree surgeon for their chippings.....would these chippings not include bark....ie tree chopped and put into shredder = wood and bark chippings.

Therefore the problem that I have is it is mould on the bark bits.....
