Sour crop help please

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Daphne has a nasty case of sour crop. Our vet has diagnosed it, but is mainly a small animal practice and doesn't stock a wide range of poultry meds. Egluntine's kind advice about probiotic yogurt and Daktarin has kept her going all week, but she isn't recovering and now has got wobbly and weak.

I was put in touch with a poultry vet by my practice, they recommend giving her nystatin. However they don't stock it, neither does my practice and even if they wrote a prescription a 'human' pharmacist would not be able to fill it without a special order... which would take too long to arrive, especially with the Christmas break due. :(

Does anyone know of an over-the-counter medicine containing Nystatin ? - I've googled frantically, but it seems that Nystan cream was discontinued this year and is no longer available in the UK. If anyone has managed to get hold of some in the past and still has some, would you please PM me - I'm pretty sure I will lose her if I cannot get hold of some soon.

Yours hopefully,

Sorry can't help, but why don't you try a few different vets? I have a sick girl at the moment and luckily have found a vet down the road who's a Poultry Specialist who is willing to sell me medicine over the counter, you may find a vet who stocks it and given the circumstances would be willing to pop some in the post to you without all the red tape, or you could fetch it.

You can search for vets using this link -

Click on advanced search and tick poultry.

I really hope you find some and she pulls through, I know what you're going through. :(

I'm so sorry to hear that, poor little chook. What a thing to happen just before Christmas.

My plan B if Skye doesn't make it, (and she might not), is/was to get Bobbie 2 new friends asap, before Christmas if poss. I would be worried about Bobbie pining, as like you I only have 2 chickens.

I'm sure someone would have 2 lovely chooks to be her friends and it would stop you worrying about her. Even if they don't get on at first she would have something to take her mind off her friend.

Thinking of you Helen and sending hugs....
