sheldon
My gingernut has been loosing feathers for a while and I have been dusting her and coop with loose powder and the dust bath for a couple of months. Shes had cat food and poutry spice and no joy. I have just noticed that my pepperpot is going the same way. Is there any medicine they could both take? I am happy to go without eggs until they are both okay. Both of them still lay every day. Sheldon
Guest
I found lifeguard poultry tonic was very good for restoring the feathers of my ex batts.
sheldon
I think I have some of that somewhere. Thanks poet. I think I going to call the vet tomorrow morning. I think they must have a parasite.
chocchick
How long is a while? It is probably a moult and they will drop out, stop laying eggs and grow back. I'm going to post some pictures of my balding chicken in another thread (as she looks silly ).
sheldon
From looking at your moulting photos, they are defo not moulting. The Gingernut has been losing feathers since Oct, some grow back and then go again. she also has a very pink chest. Pepperpot looks fine apart from her under carriage which is bold. I think its mites or something, it looks really sore. I am really worried. I've given the coop a good dust today. Its just seemed to have gone too long. A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Redfrock was singing the praises of Lifeguard tonic to me. It sounds like wonder stuff. Mites should be visible. I clean my coop with poultryshield so it really 'gets in' to the wood. If you're really worried, the vet may be able to advise? Good luck! sheldon
Vets is booked for 8.00am tomorrow. Do you think it would be okay to put them a box in the evening, or would that stress them out over night?
The good lifers
Oh dear, that's upsetting, I hope the vet sorts it out. We had our two in the kitchen in 2 boxes overnight, they were fine, they were wanting to get out in the morning though!!you could always put some water in a bowl next to them, they are quite docile ay night, just put some holes in the box before they go in it and a bit of straw!! good luck, hope they are ok. sheldon
I am hoping that it will be okay. Its hard to keep an eye on them with the early dark evenings. I should have done something sooner. Peggys chests is very sore.

MedusA
By all means get her checked out by a vet for infestation, but hopefully it is just is a major moult. Do keep us posted. *fingers crossed*
sheldon
Just been to the vets and its not mites, lice or the moult. She confirmed that Peg has been severely hen pecked by Pat. She also had an impacted crop which was making her chest even more exciting to peck. Shes got anti-biotics and has to be separated from Pat until her feathers grow back and she is fitting fit again. Anybody got a spare small hutch in the Oxfordshire area that I could borrow?? Sheldon
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Have you looked at those bumper bit thingies to help stop the pecking one from pecking as well?
