valread
I had my 3 girls at the end of June and one of them has always been a bit of a 'runt'. She was never very big, never really laid (we only had the very occasional egg) but was a real character, always very chatty but a bit slow on the uptake. The cold weather of the past few weeks has seemed to bother her sometimes and yesterday she refused to come out of the nesting box for quite a while but seemed ok later in the day. This morning she obviously wasn't good and we brought her into the house where it was warmer but sadly, by lunchtime she was gone. I know there was nothing specific to warrant a trip to the vet but does anyone have any ideas what could have gone wrong?
Egluntyne
Sorry to hear the news. It could have been any one of a number of things. Occasionally you do get a hen that just doesn't thrive. You did all you could.
catherinej
Sorry to hear your sad news. At least she was warm and comfortable when she did pass away.
Gamebird
Sorry to hear your news. It sounds as though she went peacefully.
Griffin
The same thing happened to one of ours recently. Catherine was a hybrid who lasted barely a month here. Almost from day one she just didn't seem to do as well as the others we bought at the same time. She did this weird nodding thing with her head and wasn't all there. She didn't gain weight and grow like the others, despite all my efforts she lost condition. She spent the last few days of her life living indoors but wasn't interested in any foods whatsoever. She basically just wasted away. She was vaccinated, wormed, had every food imaginable and couldn't have been more loved but it just wasn't enough. I guess for some chickens it's not.
