Daisy's mum
My poor Isabelle has been molting for a few weeks and now her back end is bald and it's freezing outside, she is really shivering. Any suggestions???? I am thinking about cutting up an old jumper and making her a little suit to wear...... is this a good idea? and if it is does anyone have a pattern Julie x
Suzy
I've seen my moulting chicken shivvering and I rushed in and made her some pellet porridge. Unfortunately I've created porridge monsters as they go mental if they don't get it now and we get all sorts of squaking and taps at the window. She still looks cold though! Stupid things - why moult now?
Daisy's mum
LOL yes it is a stupid time to moult! I have made her a salmon pink jumper out of an old M&S cardi and tried it on for size...please note chickens do NOT like trying stuff on.....have made some alterations and am giving it a while before I try again so as not to stress her too much. The forecast for the next few weeks is for freezing conditions so I need to do something! Have made them hot mash too! She is really shivering but felt nice and warm when I picked her up. Gamebird
The shivering action is obviously working if she feels warm when you touch her. If you cover her then she will not be able to fluff up what little feathers she has and if she is stressed by wearing the jumper then that will have a negative effect on her well-being. Some extra protein would help her get her new feathers - rinsed tuna and/or organic cat food helps.
Daisy's mum
Thank you for your comments, actually the other girls have since set upon her and pecked her wings making them bleed so I have had to separate her. I will take the jumper off her at bed time, don't want to stress her any more yet. Shall I keep her apart from the others now till her wounds heal? I feel so terrible that I was only trying to hep her and now I have made things worse for her. The whole of her back end is bald and it is going to get much colder. Gamebird
Once a chicken bleeds then the others tend to peck at it even more. You could spray the bleeding area with gentian violet spray which not only disguises the blood but is a mild antiseptic as well. I would probably separate her for a while so you can give her some protein and allow her to get her strength back and heal her wounds. Woodcat
As she has to be seperated maybe you could either bring her in or put her somwhere where she is protected from the cold for a few days while she heals up a bit this would also be a good chance for her to have some extra protein without the others stealing it The warmth might help her with her regrowing because then she will not be wasting energy on staying warm
