1911 Census

Recommended Posts

"I've just been trying to find out who lived in our cottage but have had no luck. :(

We live in a hamlet, not on a street and have a house name rather than a number... any suggestions?"

I have found it helpful to look at the Enumerators description of the area, sometimes you can work out which way they walked round by working between that and the actual census pages, sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt.

Once I found that a hamlet had been included twice, I think it was Crofthandy, once walking in one direction and then again later walking in the opposite direction.:lol: No idea if it was the same ennumerater or not. Was it a mistake or were the residents having a laugh at someone elses expense I guess we'll never know :lol:

I've found some of my great grandparents :D and found out the were born in Herfordshire, Rotherham, Banbury and Lincolnshire.

My grandad on my Dad's side remains a mystery. He has a very unusual middle name and there can't be that many boys with that name. Dad is sure my grandad was born before 1911. Dad tells me he was very secretive about where he came from. I am determined to crack this mystery 8) which is why I was up early on a Sunday morning

No, not yet.

I found a young boy with the same first, middle and surname but he couldn't be my grandad :? as he was a few years too old. His father had the correct name but his mother did not. The young boy lived in staffordshire and my grandad came from Nottinghamshire :? Grandad had two sisters but they could of course have been born after 1911. The boy in the census came from a family who could afford a servant as a servant was listed living in the household, my grandad was a miner all his working life.

The boy I found was the only one with the same first, middle and surname as my grandad in the whole of the UK in 1911 at the time of the census.

I daren't phone my Dad again today, I phoned him 8 times yesterday trying to get more info from him
