I did a Google search but it didn't narrow it down, just referred to it as folklore/fairytale. We were talking about this story at the weekend and MIL has it as one of her favourites...might be nice to try and get her a copy! My grandma used to tell me and my brother that story, and I didn't realise it was a real story, I thought she'd made it up - I can't remember any of it now and she died years ago so I can't ask her!! Was there a line in it about "We shall have to see what we shall see" because I remember her saying that a lot and not sure if it's from that story or not....
