Clur
Taking a step back and speaking as someone who lived on Heathrow's back door (literally by the runway, now THAT was an experience...), Heathrow provides a lot of valuable jobs. My grandfather and dad worked at the airport until their retirements, and DH worked there for about 6 years. No one moves close to the airport without being aware of the noise and the potential for expansion - we moved out just before the major building work started at T5. That said, I am vehemently against the new runway. I am not against the airport, air travel, or the industry, but I do not see the need for knocking down homes and ruining a village. In my humble opinion BAA are looking for a quick fix for their financial problems and I am sure there are more sustainable options than a third runway. They are (literally) taking a bulldozer approach and hoping that the great UK populas will have a moan and a groan, then mutter into their cups of tea about how terrible it is without actually doing much about it. The Greenpeace land-buying approach may be fruitless, and probably is, but at least it's illustrating the strength of feeling. I hope it continues.
