does egg colour change???

Recommended Posts

I think I may be a bad chicken mummy :(:(:(

when my girls started laying I knew eggactly who laid which eggie.... now I am finding it hard to tell the difference

Does the egg colour change? Margo used to have dark speckles on, but now they are speckle free. Hazel used to be a really dark brown, but now they are all a 'normal' egg colour :? I could also tell by there shape, but not any more :(

is this usual??? I am feeling bad that I can't tell them apart...

Any advice?

Two of my little ex-batt monsters have changed egg colour too - I think they do it on purpose

Joy used to lay very pale cream lumpy-bumpy eggs - very easy to recognise. After a two/three month period of softies and no eggs at all (and a moult and growing of feathers including knickers) she now lays mid-brown eggs with speckles on the bottom and no lumps or bumps.

Dandelion originally laid plain pale eggs. When she unexpectedly started laying again last week after a gap of four/five months of no eggs at all  (but much growing of feathers) she now lays mid-brown eggs with dark large speckles all over.

The other four have stayed pretty constant (though wth very different egg colours and shapes, to say they're all the same hybrid and all fed and kept the same), but it's a good job I caught these two in the act, or I'd have never known who was doing what. But I was so shocked at Dandelion laying eggs again - 5 in 7 days - I'd have been doing the egg dance anyway :D

I am lucky with mine, I have a White Star who lays pure white eggs so no confusion there  a Light Sussex who lays pale beige eggs that have one pointed end then 2 Pepperpots one that lays egg shaped standard egg coloured eggs less than 70g in weight, the other lays eggs that are sometimes nearly round and are darker brown and bigger than 70g usually.

The colour of the eggs does vary a little and when they are just starting or windinding down on laying they tend to be a bit different.

Hi

Our eggs change colour, shape, size and texture - not greatly but enough to notice a difference. :? Some are speckled and darker at one end, others sometimes are really smooth and we've had a couple of rough textured ones. :)

I like the variety

I have four hens still laying an egg a day
