clongmoor Posted January 19, 2009 Share Posted January 19, 2009 We are so excited to be getting two more chickens tomorrow. I have decided to go for two Sussexes in different colours - the breeder has light, buff and blue which is apparently more rare. I really can't decide but think I will go fo the light and the blue (I think my 4 year old son thinks the chicken will actually be bright blue!) And we are having a 4m run built next week too for our 4 girls. I was just thinking how far we have come since pondering getting a couple of chickens last summer - I couldn't imagine life without them now! Does anyone else have a blue sussex? Great character, very handsome, reliable layer, but most likely of my five to go broody. I would like a Light Sussex, and will get one when we want to add a couple more girls. chickenanne Posted January 21, 2009 Share Posted January 21, 2009 I have a light sussex, and she's my favourite hen: though always getting into mischief. She's definitely naughtiest, and regularly outsmarts my OH (not sure who that says more about!) in nicking treats from pockets etc. Most of the "dual purpose" breeds like her are rasonably docile. My dad used to keep sussex' as broodies (to rear other chicks); some strains were actually bred to be good broody mothers, (not all strains were bred for this though). When we lost a girls to Mr Fox it made me realise just how much we saw them as pets and how much we loved them so want a selection of very friendly hens. Are they really broody? I've read the light sussex is more inclined than the silver but don't know how true this is. She's very sweet and it was nice that when she went through her moult this winter, she didn't have to struggle with laying at the same time, and now she is beautiful again and all ready for her spring eggs . The blue is a bantam - about the size of a pigeon at the minute and very very fast (she made a dash for it when she got home!) The blue is basically a buff with bluey grey collar and tail feathers and a slightly blue face. The breeder said it was a cross between buff and coronation sussex. My husband is very smitten with Cynthia (light) even though he wasn't bothered about getting any more! who could resist them hey?? mostin Posted January 21, 2009 Share Posted January 21, 2009 Your photo needs to available on a public website such as flickr or photo bucket. Once it's on their I find it easiest to right click on the photo to get it's properties, then you can copy the photos web address.
