Margalot
Hello, I wondered if anyone could reassure me? We have only had our hens 2 weeks today and one of them seems poorly? over the last few days she has been sitting under the coop in the afternoon quietly with her body hunched as if ahe wants to roost. But she has been eating and seems perfectly normal when she does move around. However today she got up and then went promptly back into the coop and is closing her eyes intermittantly. I have treated them all with flubenvet for the past 7 days, she looks well otherwise ie no sniffles that I can detect, but I did find a complete watery poo when I came home yesterday, but cant be sure she did it, it looked like white watery paint. Any ideas what I should do? I am very new henkeeper, but they are like your children you just know when they are ill. Do you think I should keep her on the flubenvet i.e. on a grape for the next couple of days? today is day 7 of treatment and they have had it mixed in their pellets (although I will be doing the grape method next time as I am sure they have not had enough!) Help!
Ain't Nobody Here
Is she one of the ones who's laying?
Margalot
no she hasnt laid yet, we think the others have all laid now. One of them even made an annoucemnt this morning after she had done it!
Ain't Nobody Here
It could be that she's getting ready to lay? White watery poos aren't that uncommon but it's worth keeping a close eye on her anyway. Hopefully Egluntine will be along soon! She always has great advice to offer . Margalot
Thank you the others didnt behave that way though? and she is the only one who hasnt crouched......really worried, Ginger just also happens to be my sons hen who is the most involved with them and he is quite upset! Got to pop out now so will log on later to see if any better, thank you again Michelle
Margalot
Just came home and let them out to free range, Gingers up now and has had something to eat and seems a bit like her normal self, Is this normal behaviour before they come into lay? Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry I'm not much help . Mine didn't behave like that before laying either (although I have noticed white watery poos on occasion). I'm hoping someone else will have experience of this and reassure you soon . Egluntyne
Difficult to say what is ailing her. It could be related to laying, but it doesn't cause problems for the majority. Have you examined her? Any lice mites etc? Any swelling on the abdomen? How does her crop seem? Is it empty first thing? Have you listened to her chest by placing an ear along her back? Does it sound rattly?
Mrs AVP
Did you purchase her from Omlet? As this recently happened to my hen and another members hen recently bought from there. Is her comb pale coloured?
Margalot
Thank you, I did check her over yesterday and she seems fine no obvious lumps no mites/lice, and she seems back to her normal self today. I am happier today as she is up and has stayed up so far and is eating and drinking well. We got her form a Meadowsweet agent, her comb isnt pale. Thank you I am sure I will come across many more problems.but its so nice to know you are all here........
