I don't understand my chickens and their eggs!! HELP!!

Recommended Posts

i have 3 definatly female chickens (light sussex, asbo bantam and a silkie) and a not sure as it looks much more male but it doesn't crow (silkie)

I on average get 3 eggs a day, but have had a couple of 4 egg days and normally all my eggs are white, or slightly off white.

Today I had a largish brown egg, and I'm highly confused.

Silkies definately lay white eggs, and I though light sussex did too? and then my bantam is white, so she should lay white eggs?

This is my bantam http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b345/tomcat1/HappyHens039.jpg

and this is the ?male silkie

I would say the layer of the brown egg is the white chicken in the top pic. Is that the sussex? Only it doesn't look like a sussex either! Sussex lay a light brown egg, so it wouldn't be unusual to occasionally get a darker brown one. Also she has red ear lobes so I expect her to lay brown eggs. Or is she the bantam and the black fluffy one one of the silkies. Sorry, bit confused!

Just looked again, the white hen also has white legs, so am assuming that that is the sussex, in which case she is a white sussex rather than a light sussex (lights have the black feathers around their neck and in their tails ) :D
