where can i buy woodchip in the Bristol/South Glos area?

Recommended Posts

We've had our girls since the start of December (both laying now so everything going according to plan there) and we really need to put something down on the floor of the run now the grass has gone.

thinking of woodchip on top of patio slabs but have had great trouble sourcing any - the only type we could find was in B&Q and was bright red and didn't want to poison the girls from the dye.

have considered hemboise but have an eglu winter cover and not sure if it will stay dry enough.

would appreciate some advice - i don't want to have to s"Ooops, word censored!"e up a another lot of poo and mud in a hurry

Oh, i wasn't sure i could use the playground stuff.

When you say it lasts ages do you mean it does break down in the end but takes longer?

B&Q do a natural version too, I got mine there - try the big B&Q in Longwell Green as they are very helpful and will order it in for you (I've just moved away from St George) The garden centre down in Willsbridge (by the railway bridge) are very helpful about getting stuff in too.

My woodchip has been in my run for about 14 weeks or so and is just beginning to break down in to a crumble now, it looks ripe for replacement now so I will 'seive' it in to the wheelbarrow using a sheet of wire mesh and put the biggest bits back in with fresh stuff.

Longwell green :) that's one of my nearest B&Q. In the morning I'm going to the feed merchants in Warmley so will pop in on the way back.

Just got back from B&Q in St Neots (purchased roof for run :D ) and they are selling their natural wood chippings off at £3.00 a bag instead of five pounds!

Looks like they are changing the packaging as they have some at full price in different style bag.

Go grab a bargain!

I'm in south bristol and have some of my wood chip left. It's small chips and sometimes has a bit of greenery in it's but only about 1% I've always used it for my hens.

My allotment site buys lorry loads of the stuff a few times a year so we all share it out and it only works out a £1 a sack but not everyone can store vast quantities.

If you want a few sacks £1 for two half filled sacks (as i can't carry a full one)

I've pm'd you.

What feed place do you use? I always wander up to Nibley bird farm to get my pellets/corn, mainly just so I can check out the latest chooks they have!

Far too dear - mgo to Nichols feed merchants I think the last time I payed £7.40 for 25kg layers.

They sell everything - including a bag of sunflower heads, sacks of straw, pet food, grit, corn, mixed corn, feeder, drinkers, easi bed and that other stuff that everyone seems to use in their walk in runs. All the health care stuff for chickens and everything and anything for horses.

As well as being open in the week they open 9 -12 on Sat mornings.

I visit every other month and stock up.

Oh forgot to say that went to B&Q the play stuff is so expensive that I think I'll stick to what I've got. It would cost me a fortune to use that play bark even if it id last longer.
