Haltonshappyhens
Hello, My blackrock is laying regularly again but her eggs are looking a little odd. . they are very large (for her!) but are slightly mottled in colour and have these kind of bumpy scaley patches on them. . they also look like she was half way though laying when she stopped and started again giving a kind of dented ring all the way round... I have only ever bought perfectly formed eggs from the supermarket (confession)so I am not sure whether this is normal ? Are they okay to eat? should I be worried about her-she is eating drinking and acting normal.... thanks
Saronne
Hi, The eggs are safe to eat - mine sometimes lay odd looking eggs with rough patches but the insides are absolutely fine. As long as your hen is well in herself, it's probably nothing to worry about. Saronne P.S. Have you tried mixing a little cod liver oil into her pellets? It can help with calcium absorption, etc. Paris Nicole Dorothy Germaine Jordan
Haltonshappyhens
oh thats a good idea.. her buddy the cream legbar has been laying softies so I have upped the grit and baked egg shell rations hoping that it would help.. next step cod liver oil then!! thank you
Ain't Nobody Here
Nothing to worry about . I often get rough patchy eggs from Maisie and there have been quite a few photos of eggs with ridges or bands on them on the forum. (I think a fright can cause them). Hen Watch
Hi, I've had all manner of odd eggs and now that mine are 2 years old I don't really get "perfect" eggs anymore. They are usually bumpy, odd shaped, speckled when they weren't before etc. Take a look at these pics ..... I've probably had (and eaten) nearly all those shown on here. http://www.omlet.co.uk/guide/guide.php?view=Chickens&cat=Eggs&sub=strange
ubereglu
I wouldn't worry. Starlet always lays bumpy eggs as she eats the grit out of the flowerpots!
