atsw
It's been a while, but when I opened the girls up this morning there was more than just straw in the nest box. All that's greeted me for the last couple of months has been piles of poo ( ), but today was an attempt at an egg. I say attempt because the shell was soft and wafer thin and Fifi was trying to eat the yoke ( ), but it was, never the less, an egg . I'm sure it was Fifi that laid it, she is rather prone to producing soft shelled eggs. Production from her stopped back in October last year when she went into a dramatic moult (almost bald!), but she looks really good again now, lots of bright shiny feathers and a deep red comb. So, if I can just get Di and Anna to re-start as well we'll be able to stop buying eggs from Mr Waitrose. I'm sure Anna is nearly there, she's also got a deep red comb again and just 'looks' ready. Di has always been flighty, wont let anyone near her, and isn't back to full form after her mini moult in December, so I think there's a while to wait for her to re-start. dancing cloud
Well done that hen . May there be many more and maybe she can give the others a hint! My Dandelion laid nothing for over five months, having laid every day when first rescued. I assumed she'd taken me up on the early retirement option and then three weeks ago she produced an egg followed by more almost every day since . I'm still not sure what started her off again, but all offerings are very gratefully received!
