Feathered feet and snow

Recommended Posts

I went out last night and covered the front of the run with a picnic blanket, to keep the snow out. The back of the run is against a fence (maybe a 4 inch gap) so I thought that would be sheltered. Oh, how wrong can you be! I got up this morning to find most of the run coated in mini snow drifts :( My girls are pekins, and don't like getting their feet wet. How is everyone else coping with their feather legged girls?

mine arent orps, but the whole of my run is covered with a huge green waterproof tarpaulin I got from Aldi..it covers the whole eglu run with extender...so no snow gets in....well a tiny bit near the door, but really only a smattering, and the entire garden is inches deep...

My girls wont venture out into the snow at all...

so my advice would be to cover it all up at night...from side to side...and if it drifts in the front, attach something else.....for the night...

Dont put it on so tight you block air obviusly LOL :-D

best of luck.. :-)

(mine are on woodchop at the moment..in their run)

Your run sounds like a differnt set up...the tarpaulin I got from Aldi was a set of two..they are enourmous....I'd advise covering your run with these, and attaching with cable ties...as they are cheap..

I raked up all the snow i found this morning and covered the top of the run with blankets, but only the chickens came out, the bantams were big fat wimps, even when i chucked some corn down for them

They ate the snow from the door but didnt want to walk in it...which makes little sense as they have fluffy feathered feet and the chooks bare feet and theyre perfectly happy!

Nevermind  silly chooks.

My girls got their first experience of snow in the run this morning - they were not impressed

it had blown in the side and covered half the run including the ladder, there was a queue as they all stopped in the doorway looking at the ladder and then one by one flew out of the cube missing the ladder out completely.

Then all stood in a huddle at the foot of the ladder discussing what the white stuff was, and no doubt planning to complain to the landlord about the drop in living standards
