Are we laying, are we not...?

Recommended Posts

So, my girls (who arrived in May) have been a pretty steady 2 a day since July. They seemed to go on strike over Christmas when I went away and they were confined to the Eglu run to make it easier for very lovely neighbours. They did moult over this time too having not done it before.

The strike ended about 2 weeks after Christmas when they got to roam around our small garden again and the moult slowed, but were only 2 a day for a short time. I got tired of poo everywhere so they have a rather good run which was made ages ago and they have lived in until i felt sorry for them when we had snow and hard frosts ie nothing to eat. Lots of space, they have their own dust bath, the Eglu is in there. They seem to be on strike again. I let them roam around the garden again to see what would happen. We have had 2 eggs in 2 days.

Is this a seasonal thing or are they being little expletives who have been spoilt by the lovely garden and who don't like any form of fencing? I had to BUY some eggs. How distressing!

Any comments greatly received!

I too am astonished at the size and quantity of poops now, and am re-thinking my arrangements for the spring and summer....

I too decided to keep them in the run...much to their disgust, but I've given them treats and they seem to ahve got over it...

I would stick to your guns, and ensure they have enough food, water and some supplement to help them over the moult and too boost them in the cold weather...

and see what happens... :-)

best of luck...

Glad to hear it's not just mine! TBH, I think it is the weather though as they have roamed for a about a week now and we've only had one egg. How rude! I know what you mean about sticking to your guns but their run was full of snow and ice and there was no scratching to be done so at least they can eat grass. They LOVE grass! They have stripped their run bare of it. I'll spoil them until the frosts stop then they'll jusy have to lump it!

My girls hate being in their run during the day and complain bitterly if they see me in the garden (having building work at present) but its a battle of wills which must be won or they will have you on a piece of string :?

Egg production seems a bit erratic at moment with the terrible weather. OH's bantams are on a "go slow" but my girls (including my ex-batts) are putting in a credible performance. Still managing to sell a few eggs to colleagues which keeps them happy :)
