pekinpotty
hi can anyone give me advice for a friend please. she's got an egg bound hen. she's been keeping her warm in a box by the radiator, gave her a bath night before last which helped her lay that egg but now got lump and red bottom again. she has bathed her again tonight but as yet no egg has appeared. i've given her some info on lubricating the vent is there anything else she can do please? oh, and she's tried sitting her on a warm hot water bottle. Egluntyne
Your friend could try giving the hen a calcium supplement. If it is a soluble one, it should get into her system quickly and will help strengthen the contractions needed to push the egg out. The Dogmother
Is the egg visible? It's unusual to be egg bound for two eggs in a row; personally I'd take her to the vet
chelsea
Steaming worked for us once. We held the chook over a bucket of warm water, with a towel covering the bottom of the hen and the bucket (to keep the steam in). Its a 2 person job really. Hold the chook there for a few minutes. Our chook expelled an egg a few minutes later. As Claret said, if you are worried contact the vet.
The Dogmother
If you can see the egg, or it is just inside, then steaming or lubes work. If it's higher up, then some warmth will help, but you have to wait for it to get lower. It is very important not to break the egg inside her. pekinpotty
she bathed her again last night but no egg. the lump hasn't moved but she is a bit brighter. her poos are sometimes solid sometimes runny. she's giving oyster shell , perhaps it's the extra calcium boost she needs.
