My son is starting his AS Level Biology coursework and has decided to do something on chickens. He has asked me if I can find out what battery hens eat - like the exact composition - like the little slip of paper you get on a mash or layers pellets sack. Are battery hens fed mash and pellets exactly the same as 'our' pets? I am sure I have read that there is an Omleteer whose Dad worked in the poultry industry.....?

They are fed on bog standard layers mash.

 

I expect he will be able to find out the constituents by googling.

Ex-batts are about to get their own range from Allen & Page - he may be able to compare the nutritional info. There's no info on their website yet, but if he emails them they will send al the details. They sent me a pack of info when I enquired and a voucher too

Thanks. That is useful information. I had seen about the Ex-Batts feed in Practical Poultry (I think), but the penny hadn't dropped about looking at a comparison. I will suggest it to him.
