Minnie&Moose
Any thoughts folks as to how reliable electrified poultry netting is under the current snow conditions? I've shaken all the snow off our netting, realigned some of the sections that were sagging a bit, and checked the voltage levels - which seem fine. But, being relatively new to this I'm concerned that I might be putting our chickens at risk from the local foxes by leaving them out within the netting during the day when we're not with them. Having recently introduced 2 birds I'm not overly keen to shut them all in one eglu run plus converter just yet (they're used to much more space when all in together), and if avoidable, would rather not shut them up separately. So advice from those of you with electic fencing would be very welcome. Thanks.
..lay a little egg for me
I checked the voltage on mine too and it seemed OK. I would have thought that if the voltage is up around the 7000 mark (as mine was), it must be enough! I checked all the strands at the furthest distance from the energiser and they were all OK. Perhaps because snow contains a large amount of air it doesn't conduct the electricity all that well?
livvyshens
If you're happy with the voltage reading - and my understanding is that you don't want it to drop below 4000v - then all is well.
Gamebird
I agree with the above. My electric fencing has been fine in the snow. It didn't seem to affect it but it's worth keeping an eye on the voltage. It will only be the snow on the ground touching the bottom strands that will affect it. Any snow sitting on the fencing further up with not be a problem.
