A chickychickychick-ENN!!
So right Ginette. I'm still reeling from an incident yesterday in which I witnessed a prominent 'gentleman' make a 'joke' to a packed hall in which he used the 'w' word in a blatantly unsavoury (ok, racist) context. I left in protest and was jeered for explaning my reasons for leaving. I don't think I could have looked my black mates in the eye if I hadn't. It was disgusting. It IS 2009 and not 1730, isn't it? Guest
Gosh! perhaps you can make an official complaint? I was thinking about this again yesterday and realised that I consider fact to be perfectly acceptable, but anything used in a derogatory way is not. I suppose that people are nervous of using 'black' to describe someone because that used to be a derogatory term. I am young enough not to feel that connotation, so quite happy to use it. A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I feel the need to do something about it but not sure what. No journos there to my knowledge.
Egluntyne
How about raising the matter with the person himself, and with the owner of the venue. Maybe even mention the incident to the local newspaper.
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Those are all options. I'm trying to calm down properly before taking action. I'm very gobsmacked by it still. To have a whole hall full of people responding like that is so deeply shocking.
