...Silly question time, having been to Wales with the three smallies I have, obviously, come home with half the beach in bags and buckets. We have several very LARGE pieces of white rock which shine as they have crystals in them and we wondered if we could put them in the fish tank. Has anyone done this? It might seem daft but I worried in case they would poison the goldfish as they came from the sea

We used to have a large chunk of white slate-like stone that came from my parents garden in our fish tank. We cleaned it thoroughly first before we put it in, and had no problems with it. We gave it a final soak in water taken from the tank during cleaning before we put it in the tank.

Hi Becky. I definitely WOULDN'T use those rocks in your tank. They will always contain a certain amount of salt and this will contaminate your tank.

It could also change the water chemistry making the water softer or changing the pH etc.
