Luvachicken
Well, the chickens and eglu and run arrived as planned. I managed to get in from work just as the man was taking the chickens out of the cat box. They made such sweet noises. Mind you, the chickens and eglu were much bigger than I thought and I did find their feet a bit scary. They have settled in well and soon got the hang of going up and down the ladder. They really enjoyed their first explore round the garden, even though they did behead some of my snowdrops .Our dog is not so sure of them - worth chasing she thinks. Any ideas on dog control would be welcome. She is 12. Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to clean the ladder, it seems to be difficult to get to. and run arrived 11/02/09 arrived 11/02/09 - Matilda arrived 11/02/09 - Charlotte arrived 11/02/09 - Evie - layed 3 eggs in the first week
Ain't Nobody Here
Congratulations on the new cube and chickens . (And on getting eggs so quickly .) Re dogs, keeping them on a lead till they get over the manic excitement stage can work, failing that, a water pistol/supersoaker .
Plum
I did find their feet a bit scary. Wait till you see their beaks Congratulations Lucky chickens getting at your snowdrops already. You'll have to confine them a bit. i use omlet netting. I think with the dog most people advise keeping her on a lead to begin with until she settles down. I climb in to clean the ladder. Have you got a new cube because I understand they have the new bigger door. I did the drop down conversion so access is easy. Enjoy your chickens, I look forward to pictures. Great colour cube and I love their names.
Ecky
Hi, Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to clean the ladder, it seems to be difficult to get to. I know the problem. I have a new cube, but the door is still too small to get in and out without being covered in poo/mud. I have, as Plum, done a conversion. Basically I have removed the clips from the top part of the end of the run (top, left, right) and put the spare clips at the bottom of the part (as a hinge). I then used a couple of link chains (the one to walk two dogs on one lead) to hold the part in place. I found them a perfect tight fit, leaving no gap for the fox or the chickens to get in/out. I now can fold the whole top part down and step over it for access. Mind you, I have an extension and the roof drops down slightly, however, it is easily lifted up and once the clips are closed it is fine. Hope this helps. Mmmhhh, just found this thread: http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=39647&hilit=cube+conversion I've got my cube on the 11th Feb and still have the old door in it . Might has to do with an extension? Will have to investigate. Anyway, as you don't have a big door, the above might still apply. Hope this helps. Good luck and welcome. Plum
Hi, I have an extension and the roof drops down slightly, however, it is easily lifted up and once the clips are closed it is fine. If you buy a spare run frame and put it just inside the door it keeps its shape
