rarara
Hi all I have a million and one questions, but i thought i's ask this one Can you recommend a chicken book? I trawl the internet day after day and pick up bits of info here and there. However, I think I'd benefit from having a 'handbook'. Any recommendations? I think a chook keeping course might be in order as well TIA
laurmurf
I've read just about everything going - my local library had a huge stock that i read twice over and then i bought even more . I like Christopher Graham's (i think that's it) book - he's editor of Practical Poultry magazine for general information and intro. I'll look at my shelves tomorrow and see what i think is most useful and post again. by the way, i've done three courses now - beginners, advanced and the junior one! very useful! I'm glad i waited a wee while before i did the advanced because i was more familiar with chooks in general.
fluffyknickers
Funny thing happened today. Went in to waterstones to buy a cookbook and there on the shelf under "We reccomend" - two chicken books. One supported (or something) by Practical Poultry maagzine and the other (cheaper so I bought this one) called "Keeping Pet Chickens" by Johannes Paul and William Windham. I got chatting to one of the people that work there and I said i had just got some and he said "we have sold quite a few - seems to be the thing at the moment!" x
Hen Watch
I have "Keeping Pet Chickens" - Johannes Paul & William Windham - good begginer stuff - lots of pics - can buy it from Omlet online. I've got "Choosing and Keeping Chickens" by Chris Graham too. Excellent also. I also subscribe to Practical Poultry Magazine each month. However it is a real mix of articles for the beginner but also in depth stuff re: poultry club/show/breeds etc. http://www.practicalpoultry.co.uk/ Take a look at other peoples suggestions on this similar post. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=38056&p=587667&hilit=+chris+graham#p587667

nikplus
The best chicken-keeping book I've come across to date (and I've got a lot of different ones) is Henkeeping: Inspiration and Practical Advice for would-be Smallholders. It's a small, well-written book in hardback that has some great old-fashioned drawings of chickens in the middle. Only takes a couple of days to read, but includes everything you need to know while leaving out all the stuff that you can easily do without. ted
"Choosing and Keeping Chickens" by Chris Graham is the one I have found the best. Cheers
