ickle_chickies
I've had my chickens for a few months now and recently I've started to notice that the comb and ear lobes of one have started to pale and have gone a strange white colour in small patches... Is this normal and should I be doing anything to try and correct it? Thanks
Mel (& Paul)
Mmmm..... not come across that before. Are the white patches dry skin? - if so a little bit of vaseline rubbed on will do wonders. Is she healthy in all other respects - eating / drinking / laying?
Mel (& Paul)
Do you think she might have red mite -that can cause the whole comb to go pale. Are you able to post a picture of the white patches?
ickle_chickies
I've just gone out to check again, but the white-ness has gone?! Odd... I'll check for mites before I put them away later, but maybe she was just a bit stressed Well, I'm very confused...I'll post back with any new info Thanks

Budgies
Hi ickle_chickies. I've noticed our girls' wattles, faces and combs change colour quite a bit too. When about to lay or very excited (treats/freeranging) or nervous (loud aeroplanes!) they get very red, but if the chooks are perfectly relaxed (having a little doze on my lap for example), they get patchily paler. I would advocate a close check for mites or lice, because these can be responsible for pale combs/wattles, will put a strain on a chicken's system and need to be dealt with. Other than that, I give my girls Poultry Spice to keep them in tip top condition, but as their behaviour is otherwise perfectly normal, I can't see any reason to worry about this slight changing colour.
