Fourbecameeight
We have just got back and let the girls out for a bit of free ranging before bed and Honey laid an egg with no shell just at our feet. She has laid a normal egg this morning because i collected four today and she was free ranging this morning and acting normal. She is only a year old. Is this something i should be worried about, do i need to get her anything extra? They have layers pellet and afternoon treats. I have got poultry spice and battles i am giving to the ex-batts. I also have ex-bat crumb and ex-batt pellet that has a higher level of calcium and was going to move them all over to this when i finished the normal bag of pellets. I have been so worried about the new ex-batts this week and now Honeys not right but i am sure she was acting normally this morning because i was out in the garden and they were ‘helping’ like normal. Any advice would be welcome.
Egluntyne
Just a blip probably. I wouldn't overdo the afternoon treats as it may mean that she is crowding out the nutritious pellets, which have the correct balance of calcium etc. If it persists it might be time to think about a calcium supplement, but I wouldn't worry just yet. sandyhas3chucks
I have one that regularly does this sometimes up to 3 days in a row! then takes abot 4/6 days off and back to normal. There will probably ne a chewing gum shell by tom morning.I have asked & no one seems to know why this chook does it. She is not an ex bat either, so it's not down to that. oh and not tried or tested but I feel that it just MIGHT happen when shes finished off the Tuna that someone else actually needed! Plum
You could give her some eggshell. Just bake in microwave for 2mins and then pound to crumbs and she'll eat it with other food, that would give some more calcium for a couple of days. Fourbecameeight
Thank you for the replies, I will not worry just yet. I might start mixing the original pellets with the new ex-batt ones with the higher calcium, give the less treats and just keep an eye on her. She is a really lovely hen the friendliest and the first one into mischief. We had them as POL in June and have really loved having them.
