No.10 Petition re Keeping Garden Poultry

Recommended Posts

Can I make a plea that those who sign the No. 10 petition do so with their real name, not with any nicknames or extra notes attached. The petition needs to be taken seriously, and I think nicknames etc. might be discounted from the total number of signatures.

Great work, Poet!

we currently have 89 members on the facebook group, not bad considering it was only set up at the weekend! :D

Today I have been busily messaging the creators of all chicken related groups on facebook asking them to message all their members and get them to join this group and sign the petition.

I have also sent a message to Richard Lucas, creator of the 'garden poultry' petition to ask him if he would like to join forces!

If poss, pls try and join the facebook group so you don't miss out on any news.

Unfortunately, the petition I submitted regarding the Lewis' chickens has been rejected! Even more reason to put our full weight behind the 'garden poultry' petition!!!

Hi,

I'm sorry to inform you that your petition has been rejected.

Your petition was classed as being in the following categories:

* Issues for which an e-petition is not the appropriate

channel

Further information: Individual legal cases are a matter for

direct communication with the Home Office.

That's so ridiculous but probably something to do with the fact that the Lewises are in breach of a contract they signed with the council.

I have signed the garden poultry petition and have urged every one in my email address book to.

it's a pretty sweeping request, no? All local by-laws to be dropped? It's not really possible to change house deeds and tennancy contracts in the same way as by-laws, so would it even work for everyone?

Does that mean someone could set up a mini-battery-hen thingy in their mid-terrace with tiny yard? or keep however many they wanted in whatever area? There are people who keep too many chickens in too close proximity to neighbours - not many people, sure, but some do: and it isn't fair if someone keeps a few dozen hens right next to their neighbours' patio for instance.

personally, I think backyard chicken-keeping needs plenty of really good PR, and am not sure that this is it.

I agree it may seem a very sweeping statement. However, rather than start another petition and so dilute the support for them all, it seems more beneficial to put all our combined weight onto one, so at the very least we can show that there are a lot of people (voters) who have strong feelings about this issue.

Just my take on it of course

I don't think there are actually many bye-laws against keeping chickens.

Whenever people have posted on here it's been about lease or tenancy agreements or restrictive covenants, I don't think I've ever heard anyone on here complain that there was a bye-law preventing them from keeping chickens.

And as chickenanne points out, if there is a tenancy or other restriction, then lifting bye-laws won't help.

the issue, as far as I'm concerned, is chickens being classed as 'livestock'. They should not come under the banner of livestock which would prevent people like the Lewis' being threatened with eviction because they are in breach of this clause.

People should be allowed to keep chickens, if those chickens then cause a noise nuisance or other, then that should be dealt with on a case by case basis, the same as if someone's dog was barking constantly and causing a nuisance.

"Ooops, word censored!"ody can stop you having a dog or several dogs for that matter and I don't think people should be stopped from having chickens either JUST because of this 'livestock' clause.
