nicholas
I am thinking about trying to plant a thyme lawn with creeping thyme in a sunny spot of our garden. I was going to use plug plants (I've sourced them for 25 p each on the net). Has anyone ever done this and do they have any tips about spacing of plants, mulching, best time to plant etc. And, most importantly, are chickens partial to thyme or would they leave it alone? Any advice would be much appreciated.
SAB
Can't give any advice but will be watching this one with interest. Just wanted to say that if you are getting plants it would be worth getting some lemon tyme in there - we have some in our garden, planted by previous owners and it gives off a lovely scent when you brush against it. chickenanne
It's a lovely idea, I've never done it but did consider it once. The chickens would scratch it up really badly before it was very very well established, so may be worht keeping them off for the first 12 motnhs or so (depending on how well it does) It will attract lots of lovely bumble bees etc, which IMO is a huge advantage but not very bare-feet-freindly! You want to be sure that the thyme you get is the prostate form (ie sprawly-out kind) Am not sure about the gaps between plants, but am sure the planting instructions/supplier could help you with this. redhotchick
My chickens do not eat thyme, but then yours may be partial to it, who knows!
