I have had my two chooks for nearly a week now. I feed them organic pellets and the odd s"Ooops, word censored!" of veg leaves & spaghetti.

 

I have read that some give pellet porridge in the mornings? What does this consist of?

 

Also, should I be giving them grit, or do the pellets have enough 'bite' to them?

I give mine porridge in the afternoons, all I do is mix the normal pellets with some hot water, oats or weetabix and mix it all up! They just love it. I some time add raisins or sweetcorn for variety.

 

The grit should always be on offer in separate bowl.... I use these......

I mix normal layer pellets with warm water, then a little garlic powder, crushed egg shell and some bokashi bran and then mix in whatever chopped up veg I have and to the ex batts version I also add some poultry spice .

 

I don't do this all the time only as treat, sometimes first thing (without the veg) or later in the afternoon.

I don't bother with pellet porridge, unless the weather is very cold, ie several inches of snow on the ground.

 

Their ordinary pellets should provide them with everything they need.

I am mean to my poor girls. They get basic porridge ocassionally to use up any stale pellets hanging around in their grub feeder at the end of the week.

 

Instead of throwing them away, I add a mug full of warm water until it goes sludgy and devour it. But they do get a liking for it, so be warned, they may turn their beaks up at their normal pellet food.

 

Basic Recipe:

Pellets + Warm Water.

 

Enhanced Recipe:

Pellets + Warm Water + Garlic Powder + Bio Yoghurt (sometimes) + Bokashi (sometimes).

 

I just put a pot of grit in a coup cup (from pet shop) and they help themselves. Personally I don't put it in their feed.
