ChickenJo
hoping to be in a position to order my cube (yes I've finally decided on that vs the eglu!!) at the end of the month, so have started to think about what I'd like to put in there ... I'd really like to stick with something traditional if I can, but also have to be honest that my main reason for having them is for eggs. I dont want a breed that will go broody really easily and Id like something that is easy going / easy to tame if possible. Bearing all that in mind I'm thinking of some sussex's ???? The question is now hens or bantams. I think Im going to go for hens as the dogs pretty big and I think she would behave better with a chunkier chicken! But i'd really like some advice from anyone who has them (or if anyone has any other suggestions). Ive heard varying things about their broodiness. thanks in advance
Guest
Hi You sound just like I did...as i am getting omlet to deliver my cube I ordered 2 as for the same reason I just want a few eggs. Initially was going for the eglu but so many go for cube in the end...I still may get eglu one day?Now its time However the more I start looking at all those lovely frilly hens I am def going to get some mini buff orpingtons and mini wyandotte(bantams)..I havent got a clue what i am on about but I did go to look at some and what I have read they all seem friendly calm types(unless someone tells me different now). I want to try to get them all in together at the same time too The selection is vast.of chickens... Oh I ordered my cube approx 2/3 weeks ago now and due to them being busy omlet cant deliver til 14th April(sorry how many people keep hearing me harp on)! I think if u r going to build it yourself u may get it a bit earlier...just in case u want it asap Good luck this forum is really useful indie
Redwing
Congratulations on choosing the cube, lucky you! Pear Tree Farm in Astcote breeds bantams (as well as big chickens) and has a good reputation for selling quality birds and being very helpful. The Bell Plantation Garden Centre outside Towcester sell some nice hens including Sussex ones and the staff are very good too and Cotswold Poultry in Banbury is also excellent - I would suggest visiting one or more of those and having a good chat to the staff Good luck with your search, its sounds exciting
half dozen
We have two sussex girls and they are so friendly!! quite cheeky and very greedy!!! Lovely natured and let the children carry them about We went for all big breeds to put the cats off and it worked!
TAJ
I have a pure breed light sussex - she hasn't gone broody in 18 months and lays almost as good as the hybrids - they are one of the most prolific pure breed layers both the white ones and the buff are lovely looking birds. ChickenJo
thanks for all the feedback. Id forgotten about Bell Plantation Tasha ... might have to pop out at lunch time for a quick nose around a bit of a delay wont hurt for the cube, as we need to sort the garden out first ... all very exciting tho
westleigh
Hi Chickenjo,as you said its for the eggs then i would go for the larger breed rather than the batam as you will get quite small eggs, hope this helps a little
