Picachu our turkey hen produced first egg today!

 

 

Bigger than our largest Maran egg and more pointed at one end than any chicken's eggs I have seen, creamy coloured with lovely brown speckles!

My scales are not really sensitive enough to tell, but does not feel any heavier than one of our standard chicken eggs. It is her first though, so maybe future ones will be bigger/heavier.

Same here. I imagined they would be huge.

Well, from surfing the net I discovered that turkey eggs are best scrambled or in baking for fluffy texture, but not recommended for frying due to very large runny yolk. So...today I had scrambled turkey egg! The ratio of yolk to white was high, but much less yellow than our chicken eggs. Made lovely creamy scrambled egg, with delicate flavour - not as strong as chicken eggs. One egg was enough for a good amount of scrambled egg for one person (enough to put on 2 slices of toast). I definately recommend !

She seems to be laying 2 days in a row, then a day off, then laying one day, then a day off, then back to laying 2 days in a row again - so far anyway - not sure how long this will go on for!

That's interesting, if we ever win the lottery DH is talking about having the space for turkeys too!
