chick1
hi, Can i also ask about your fences, what height can a chicken "fly" over with clipped wings? We live direct onto the fields at the back of our house so i really dont want them to be off over it as i would never get them back. Ta Hev. Matthew
depends on if you have any launching points near to the fence.... ..momo (rip) used to spot a garden chair anywhere near our fence and try to launch herself off that... usually hitting the 6' fence about a foot below the top and sliding down it like a cartoon character
Omletina Kyckling
.....much depends on breed. Most of my girls have never attempted to fly over the Omlet netting (120cm?) but Tiina, my leghorn, regularly flies 5-6 foot in the air over the fence and our surrounding walls to go "exploring" - she always comes back though!! Ain't Nobody Here
I added trellis to a 3ft (ish) wall along the back of my garden. They've never attempted to get onto or over it (in 18 months!).
Doris 12
My Sussex was a bit of a daredevil and would often get herself on top of the Hen House, she only once got over the fence that fences them into their own little garden, but launched herself onto the fence that runs along the back of the garden from the (I assume) Hen House roof, saw the nice field over the fence and decided to have an explore, unfortunately along came a big dog and that sadly was the end of her so you need to maybe think about what you have got near the fence that a strong willed Chicken can launch herself from. We are going to put something along the top of the fence which is about 6 foot ,maybe some kind of netting as we don't want to lose the lovely view, and having the house in the corner of the garden gives it much needed shelter in the winter as it gets jolly windy down there. This sad event only happened on Friday so we are only just having to think about it as we foolishly didn't think she would actually get over the fence!! chelsea
Depends on the breed. Some hens are more "flightier" than others. Light, skittish hens can fly as high as 7 feet (we had a hen fly on top of our caravan from a standing position ), but the heavier & fluffy breeds cannot fly so high or not at all.
