Recommended Posts

Hi ,

Have had my chickens for about a month, from omlet. :)

my miss peper pot has been laying approx one egg every other day...for about 3 weeks, will she become a more regular layer? :anxious:

my gingernut ranger hasn't started laying at all.! well i think she layed a soft egg about 2 weeks ago but nothing since then????

do some chickens not lay at all???? :anxious:

i'm not sure about their ages as the omlet delivery man didn't know only that miss PP was older?

i'm a bit concered, should i be... am i just being an over worried chicken mummy

The signs to look out for when chickens are about to start laying are increasing size and rednes of their face furniture (combs and wattles) and crouching to the ground when you go near them. If your gingernut ranger isn't laying then it's because she's too young. Be patient! She will lay eventually.

Your Miss Pepperpot will also get more regular in her laying habits, it's early days and she's still settling into a pattern.

All will be well, it's normal to be a little bit worried about them.

We had the same thing with ours. Miss Pepperpot was lying within a week but the Gingernut Ranger 4-5 weeks later. So don't worry. Now we are getting eggs every day. Look for the signs Moochoo suggests but our Gingernut ranger does not crouch when you approach her. She is the only one of ours girls who doesn't and doesn't like to be handled, however she does lay nice eggs.

Is her comb smaller and paler than the other hen's?

The hens they supply are described as point of lay, which means that they can be anything between 16 and 20 weeks old and thus a younger hen could be a month or perhaps even more away from laying.

I'm sure that she's just a late developer and will suddenly 'redden up' and start laying.
