dorsetduck
Hi again! I'm still researching the best duck breeds to get (and those available in Dorset). Someone locally has Cherry Valley's for sale. They say they are good layers but I though they were meat birds (but I could be very wrong!). Any advice? I was after Campbells but can't find any in Dorset at the moment. Also, are Cherry Valleys much bigger that Campbells? The house I have can take about 6 campbells and I was wondering if we could have the same number of Cherry Valleys. Many thanks Nikki
Lesley
I don't know anything about Cherry Valleys but I also thought they were meat birds. Perhaps they are dual purpose? I would think that you'd be able to take six, just the same. I think someone on here did have some, perhaps they'll be along to help out. You could take a look at the Practical Poultry forum as there are many more duck keepers on there and you may be able to source Campbells on there as well.. Richard T
I don't know anything about Cherry Valleys either. The internet isn't very informative. It comes up with a company called Cherry Valley which produces ducks for meat for the catering trade. They appear to use Pekins which presumably are primarily meat birds. So, is Cherry Valley another name for Pekin? I think Pekins are are a heavy breed whereas Campbells are a light breed. I don't know if that means you wouldn't be able to keep as many Pekins in the same space as 6 Campbells. The British Waterfowl Association ( www.waterfowl.org.uk ) recommends a minimum of 2 sq ft floor space per heavy bird in the duck house.
