Hi, We have just added 4 new ex-batts to our flock and all the RIR hybrids are starting to look very similar! I am wondering whether to buy some plastic leg rings (I was going to go with 16mm ones) to tell them apart (expecially til we get to know their quirks....) Has anyone got any advice about this? Are they safe?.. I wouldn't put them on if they could injure my girls....

Thankyou

SOPHIA

I have never used them but i see repeated comments on other forums saying go for the flat ones not the spiral ones so there must be something in that advice!

You can get them on ebay and in agricultural merchants

It won't be long before you will be able to tell your girls apart, I ahve two that look the same but are very different

How do the flat ones fit on? The spiral ones were a big fiddle to fit, I held the squirming chook & DH attached the ring, managed 5 of them & couldn't catch the 6th, 7th or 8th to mark them up! We came to the conclusion that marking one of each of the pairs of the Orpies and 3 of the batties was enough, and now as Peanut (the evasive battie!) is much darker in colour to Buttercup, hopefully it won't be a problem!

I got a mixed bag of the spiral rings from flyte so fancy website. I got the spiral as I thought there was less chance of loosing them and I've had no problems. I got them as my OH couldn't tell the difference between my two coton blues.

I am also planning to use them on my ex-batts when they arrive.

I got the 16mm rings for medium to large hens and they fit fine.
