Egg Lou
Looks really good! Thanks for posting as been contemplating doing this myself so would be interested to hear how you get on with regard to dropping disposal etc
AJuff
I didn't think you needed to dispose of it. I thought you just blasted the poo away through the chippings and it soaked away??? I could be wrong . . .
wooky
This is really good to see. Looks great! Our chooks arrive next month and having thought through all the options I think I'm going to use rubberchippings. Where did you get the chippings from? I've seen some green rubber chippings at Homebase but curious about other sources.
tidygirlsuk
I got them from B&Q £8 something a bag. i used 4 10kg bags but it isnt enough. i think that i could do with 4 more. Expensive i know but you dont need to change it. Ive got powder disinfectant thats for chickens and rubberchips can be hosed. it dries quick because it doesnt absorb water. WitchHazel
Alison from Hook Farm supplies bulk bags of rubber chippings. She calculates the quantity you need oto get the right depth, and then the cost is £9.70 per square metre (so per square metre of the depthe she calculates IYSWIM) . So if your area was 2mx1m then that would be 2sq metres of the stuff. Delivery is extra. They deliver themselves within a 10? mile radius of Hook (Hampshire) and will arrange delivery further afield. http://www.chickenkeeper.co.uk/shop/80-rubber-chippings.html

Redwing
Looks really good, I would also be interested to know how it goes, I am building a second chicken run but this one won't be slabbed so these chippings could be good I had them in my horse's excercise area as a child (at least I didn't have to pay for THAT lot!!) and they were great in wet weather and always looked good however horses on excercise time do not produce as much poo as chickens so its no comparison really Let us know how you get on

purplefowler
I have had my lady's on rubber chips for nearly a month and it is great. It stays really clean and you just hose it off once a weeks or as needed. It was good in the rain too as it dries pretty quickly. The chooks love digging around in it. It is fab. It is meant to last for 10 years so should be good. I bought some dunweedin (spelling?) from my garden centre, 4 sacks at £7.99 covered the base of the cube more than comfortably. They also do different colours if you get it from their website (google it), so if you fancy abit of colour coordination... I hope you get on as well as I have with it. Your set up looks great Forgot to say it also has a citronella scent and the flies don't seem interested which is bonus!

Hi, We've got our girls on bark chippings at the moment, and are looking at rubber chippings as an alternative. Did you put anything underneath the chippings or are they straight onto the earth. I read the article here http://www.chickenkeeper.co.uk/shop/64-mud-management.html and the recommendation is to put weed mesh underneath, but I've got visions of the chickens digging through the chippings and either rucking the weed mesh up or getting their claws stuck in it! Steph101
We had our rubber chippings from Alison Wilson at www.chickenkeeper.co.uk and the service was very good. We live in Stourbridge in the West Midlands, and she delivered them along with the weed mesh for £15 delivery charge. They are made out of recycled tyres. I've had them for a couple of weeks now, and hosed them down a couple of times - I've been adding Stalosan as well. Alison says the manure just melts down into the ground... We were using the 'chicken tractor' system before, but this only works if you have a big garden - which we haven't! (We've just had the lawn re-turfed). I'm hoping the chippings work out ok; I'm a bit worried from a chicken health point of view. I spoke to Alison a couple of times and she assured me they were indestructable, and hosing them down should be sufficient. Only time will tell! Egg Lou
Sounds really good option...I was just concerned about where the pooh goes once you keep hosing it down as must collect/smell underneath? Although sounds like you are all having no problem with this so may give it a try! Does anyone know roughly the cost per square mtr from Hook Farm? Have 5 cube extensions so don't want to break the bank
tidygirlsuk
We put the rubber chippings down onto bare earth. We have had it down 6 days now and there was no need hose yet. I just raked inside the run and put a powder disinfectant similar to stalosan down then raked it back. However i dont think the Pekins poo as much as the big girls. Im going to put them on it to soon.

Sorry, a bit slow at the moment. I had a good think about the lining issue and decided that it sounded a bit unhygenic to have any barrier underneath so we have gone bare. The poo just seems to disappear into the ground. I rake it once a day and hose once a week and it all seems fine. I also thought that it might stop any stray insects from getting in and the chooks love scatching around for them. I love the stuff, it is fab

Yep i have only had my chickens 2 weeks and the edge is soil and I was admiring their excavation works today plus despite putting the water container away from the wood chips it seems to be getting rull of wood chips as they are flicking it about with their digging.. wooky
Hello, this really caught my eye-was just about to place an order for rubber chippings with 'chicken keeper'-didn't realise you could get it from B&Q or other garden centres. With the dunweein chippings did you use the playground chippings or the garden chippings? I ordered my rubber chippings today from Dunweedin, I asked about the difference and apparantly the playground chippings are 100% guaranteed wire-free where as the garden landscaping chips are only 99.5% wire free (!) plus the playground chippings are treated to be slightly tougher. Both kinds are citronella treated. I went for the landscaping chips in terracotta, all their other colours are out of stock, which is a shame, I quite fancied the green to match the eglu. Chooks don't arrive until 12th May... I've actually been quite glad for the wait in hindsight as I feel like I can get more prepared.
