So Excited! The Eggs Are Coming!

Recommended Posts

Inbetween suffering from a nasty virus and caring for my poorly baby cockerel Wally this week I've been trying to source all the eggs I want to put in my incubator next week. I'm just waiting on one more email for confirmation but it's all looking good :D We've got a really nice selection to look forward to. 5 Speckled Sussex, 3 Silver Grey Dorkings, 2 Red Dorkings, 6 Houdans, 6 Buff Laced Wyandottes and 6 Large Fowl Blue/Splash Polands some of which will be frizzle :D 28 eggs to squeeze into a 25 egg incubator  We've worked out we can squeeze them in as long as we turn manually. Assuming they'll not be 100% fertile after seven days we should be able to fit the automatic turner

This has been a truely awful week, watching Wally deteriorate, knowing we were probably going to lose him. I've cried so many tears over my boy. I'm so glad we have something positive to look forward to. It's magical watching them hatch and to see them growing up in my garden into such beautiful girls and boys.

I've got a friend putting her incubator in the post for me today because I kind of over did it with the eggs  There was a bit of confusion surrounding 6 of the eggs, I didn't think they were coming so I bought another 6 on Ebay only then to find the original 6 were coming afterall  I've just spoken to my post lady, she said she couldn't carry them all on her cart so she's going to meet me at the office in a little while so I can collect the rest. And due to my nasty virus still hanging around and me not being able to travel to collect the Sussex & Dorkings I've had to forfeit the Sussex and get Dorkings on Ebay instead. So now I'm all set to hatch the following:

Blue egg laying Dorking types

Large Fowl Frizzle blue/splash Polands

Lavender Araucanas

Black Orpingtons

Houdans

White Silkies

Buff laced Wyandottes

The hair bear bunch

I can't tell you how excited me and the kids are  They've all been employed to help with the turning while I'm at work this weekend. I've made sure I'm off the weekend they're all due to hatch because I know I'll be glued to the side of the incubator  The Poland eggs are so tiny, it always amazes me that chicks can hatch from something so small. Fingers crossed I get a fair few of each

My little lass keeps reminding me how many Saturdays before they will hatch (praying at least a couple of them do otherwise she will be gutted). We put them under Gemma on a Friday night so I have told her after tomorrow there is only one Saturday before they hatch - she has taken this to heart and keeps telling me. She is only 6 bless her.

GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! Curiousity got the better of me late last night and I decided to candle them. Imagine my delight when the first four eggs I candled all showed signs of life  In the end it's a mixed bag of results. I'm exceptionally pleased that all of the Houdans & Polands are fertile, probably all the Aracaunas too but one I couldn't see very well due to the darkness of the egg. Five out of six Dorkings and four Orpingtons. Then the disappointments. No silkies and probably no Wyandottes either although the shells are very mottled on the Wyandottes and it was difficult to tell with one or two but considering there were nine in there that is very annoying.

Emily is devastated that she'll not have a Silkie so we'll be on the hunt for some day olds around the time the rest of our eggs hatch. She will get her Silkie!
