best method of introduction?

Recommended Posts

I have fallen into the omlet tradition of trading in my eglu with two chickens for a cube with 2+ chickens :D

Just wanted some advice on the best way to go about introducing new birds.

I am keeping the eglu for as long as it takes till everyone is happy. Now do I move my current chooks into the new cube first and put the new ones in the old eglu or does that even matter?

Also when I start letting them to free range together do I need to supervise or should I just let them get on with it?

Thanks to moochoo I will have lovely 3m run in the end so hopefully there will be enough room for them to get along.

By the way how long will the intros take, the only way I was allowed the cube was by agreeing to sell the eglu to fund some of it

The situation has changed slightly sadly one of my chickens died leaving me with a lone hen Sweet Chili:(

I am going to get her some new friends as she is missing her mate.

I have read the thread on intros 1:1 but if I get 3 or 4 new hens and need to introduce them to sweet chili is it the same method?

I have a cube and an eglu so I thought about putting sweet chili in the eglu and new ones in the cube till they get to know one another. However OH thinks it is mean taking my chook out of her home (the cube) and putting her in the eglu, who is right or does it not matter?

Sweet Chili is clearly missing her friend and it is sad watching her calling for Piri Piri so I want intros to be as smooth as possible as I feel sorry for her.

Any advice would be great I know many of you must have done a similar thing

I'd see how it goes with them all in together.

If they are all new to each other then there will be no gang already formed.

If Sweet Chili gets a bit territorial about the cube, that would be the time to put her in solitary for a day or two.

thanks eglutine just got back from cotswold chickens which is great with an amber star, a bluebelle and a goldline as new friends for lonely sweet chili

Not sure she is too impressed the newbies are in the cube and sweet chili is free ranging but constantly squalking and has pecked at them through the run a bit.

Think I will put them together tonight when they are sleepy and do the same tomorrow.

I do have a eglu I can bring out if she is too much trouble

wish me luck
